Why Having a Website Isn’t Just a Good Idea – It’s Essential

We live in a world where the first thing people do when they hear about you is… Google you. It doesn’t matter if you’re a local shop, a service provider, an artist, or just getting your side hustle off the ground—people expect to find something online.

If they don’t? They might assume you’re not legit. Or worse, they’ll find someone else who does have a website and go with them instead.

When I started working on websites again after a long break (hello, motherhood), I was shocked by how many small businesses still don’t have a solid online presence. It’s not about being flashy—it’s about being findable. And having something that feels true to your brand. That’s why I always tell people: start with one page. One story. One call to action. It makes a bigger difference than you think.

Here’s why having a website isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of everything else you do.

1. People Trust What They Can See

You can be amazing at what you do, but if you don’t show up online, people are going to hesitate. A website builds trust. It gives potential customers (or clients) a chance to see who you are, what you offer, and why you’re worth it—all in one place.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a clean, simple site says: “I’m real. I care. I’m open for business.”

2. It’s Your Space—No Algorithms, No Noise

Social media’s great, but you don’t own those platforms. Algorithms change. Accounts get lost. Posts get buried. A website, on the other hand, is all yours. You decide what’s on it, how it looks, and what people see first.

Think of it as your online home—one that’s always open, no matter the time of day.

3. You Show Up in Search (and Stay in the Game)

When people look for what you do, are you showing up in the results? If not, you’re probably losing leads without even knowing it. A website helps you get found—and gives people a place to land once they do. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can help your visibility in search results – stay tuned for my next blog post!

Bonus: with the right setup, you can even track what people are doing on your site so you can keep improving.

4. It Works While You’re Sleeping

Literally. While you’re off doing your thing (or finally getting some rest), your website can still:

  • Answer FAQs
  • Take bookings
  • Collect emails
  • Showcase your work
  • Explain your process
  • Sell your products

It’s your hardest-working employee—and it never asks for a day off.

5. It’s an Investment, Not a Luxury

Yes, building a website takes time and effort (and maybe a little cash). But it’s one of the smartest investments you can make—especially if you’re serious about growing, standing out, or getting taken seriously.

If you’re wondering whether a website is really worth the time, energy, or money—it is. I’ve seen firsthand how even a simple, clean site can change the way people see your business. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just needs to feel like you—clear, trustworthy, and open for business.

Because honestly, if you’re doing great work, why hide it?
